Final

Mariely sostre
Professor Joan Harmon

When I went to the museum of modern art there were two paintings that grabbed my attention. I was looking around at the pieces to see if I could find anything catches my eye. Well I saw two paintings that I found very interesting and made me think about a lot of things. One of the paintings that I found interesting is called “Collective Suicide” by David Alfaro Siqueiros and the other painting is “Flower Festival: Feast of Santa Anita” by Diego Rivera. These two paintings made me question about what they mean and etc.
The painting “Collective Suicide” by David Alfaro Siqueiros is124.5 x 182.9cm and because it is pretty big it made me feel a couple of things one after the other. The reason why this painting made me feel a couple of things because the painting is so dark which feels like doom and death. You are not able to stop even if you tried like it starts making you feel like its inevitable. The painting has two groups of people which you could clearly see that are different from each other. Where the group is standing at you could see that there are some fallen soldiers from both sides and it looks like they are fighting for land. Which there is an empty space between them and that makes me feel gloom, despair and unhappiness because they are fighting for land. They are also losing people lives because one group wants to keep their home while the other group is just being greedy. I feel like there is so much going on and we can’t describe it just feel what’s happening, then you start to wonder what would you feel if somebody came and took your home, what you stand for basically everything that you have ever known. Then you could start picturing yourself in their place and starts making you feel like if you were there. Then it made me feel like if I was there watching everything get destroyed because the other group doesn’t know what it is to live in harmony.
The other painting “Flower Festival: Feast of Santa Anita” by Diego Rivera which made me feel peaceful and relaxed because the colors look so warm and inviting. Like you see the three girls sitting there and makes you want to feel a part of it and join them. It also makes you wonder what the red and white flowers mean because in some cultures a white flower would mean peace and the red flowers would mean love but it could mean something completely different. It also makes you feel like you are part of something that not everybody knows about and you get to show them a piece of who you are and your culture. I think about why the young girls are sitting down while the older women are standing up and have flowers in their hands. To me it feels like the flowers are symbolizing maturity because the young girls are sitting and there is a person right in front of them giving them this big bouquet of white flowers. Which could mean many things but I think that it means that they are young girls who have reached one step closer to become a women. I also think that it could mean that they have become a maiden and have to take the role they are supposed to be in. This painting made me think of why would they choose flowers and what is the true meaning of the festival? Why they choose to have those colors and why are there no men at all in the painting? It could also be a symbol of fertility; this festival could be celebrating fertility. I also have noticed that the first girl has her hair down and has a bouquet of flowers in her hand and the other two have their hair in braids which makes me think that they are going in order and she was the first to be congratulated. I have found these two painting of how they look, made me think and how they made me feel. To find  out what they could mean changed my perspective a lot.

Assignment # 11

When I went to PS1 I saw a lot of interesting collections. There was one that was called Airport Windheld by Ankunft, their piece was a stair and a chair that is connected to it. What I found interesting about the piece is the fact that you was able to sit on the chair and it was like a little ride. The chair went all the way to the top and it stops right next to a small t.v which has a black cloth covering it and you have to lift it up and look at the t.v. In the screen they have these two women who have their finger in each other mouths. There is a projection playing and of a video which was switching into different images. I found that very strange and I start to question and wonder what does the whole piece mean? What is the message the artist is trying to convey in their work? It makes me start thinking about the different possibilities of what it could mean.

assignment # 9

The Video that I saw was "On Beauty" by Hennessy Youngman he talks about how art is visual and he thinks what really makes art is the beauty that is capture in the painting. He talks about how beauty shows different types of goods that is in the world, he doesn't mean good as in products but the positive things the world gives to us. He also says that when you see the beauty in the paintings you could see the good in things and make you feel appreciative. He talks about how not everybody could make art that somebody would want to see but also that some viewers dwell to much on the painting and they take away the true meaning when they think too much of it.There were a couple of paintings that he discusses in his video which one of them was a girl crying and he said that he could be sympathetic because he didn't know the reason why she was crying. He also said that he was trying to look for different things and scenarios that would make her cry and find different solutions for them. The other painting that he spoke about he said that he couldn't be sympathetic because he already knew why the woman was crying, which was because the body that was in front of her that had the blood. He also says that he already know what happened and that he can't guess what happened. The way he used satire to communicate his ideas is that he said that every painting should be beautiful and which is not true because in different types of paintings they have different types of styles. For instance the baroque paintings have a dark background and has a little light showing in it, while there are drip painters where you won't be able to see or decipher what they really mean. So therefore he talks about beauty a lot in the video but I think beauty is the eye of the beholder.

assignement # 7

The artist that I have chosen is Nancy Spero because I like the work she created. Nancy Spero likes to convey messages through her artwork because she feels, she shows how she really thinks and feel of how the world looks to her. Her art is considered to be protest against the world because the way she portrays it is different then people would see it. She mostly paints chronicled wars, apocalyptic violence, visions of ecstatic rebirth, celebratory cycles of life and women prehistory that describes how she views these types of themes. She paints about all of these topics because she shows the true nature of these events and she don't sugar coat it. One of the chronicled war she painted a lot about was the Vietnam War and the war machine but mostly in those paintings she had a helicopter in it because she felt that there were the main focus of the war. Her husband was a big influence in her art work because of his point of view of politics. She wanted her paintings' message to be complicated and than simple that anybody can just look at it and know what its about. She wanted people to think about what the message could be and have different ideas of what the people thought was the message. One of her famous art work is in 66th street Lincoln center subway station where she drew different types of women who were real or myths, which varied from many things such as religion, real life and etc. In the painting in the subway she used a lot of red and yellow which compliments one another and gives it a warm feeling and the white surrounding it gives it also a sense of peace.

assignment # 6 Dada

The Dada artwork came to be because artists were protesting against world war 1 and there art work expressed how they felt about it and thought about the war. They came up with the name because an artist stuck a knife inr a dictionary and they thought that the name suited there work and beacs. The Dada style is more of a rebellious attitude than a cohesive style and it also broke away from tradition. The Dada artwork is more like abstract things that make an everyday thing be different or abnormal and to viewers it looks a lot like nonsense
The artwork from Jacob Lawrence  were based on African American history. In his first painting its more like Dada in a way because you can see that all but one figure looks normal while the rest seem to be missing their heads. Most of Jacob Lawrence paintings he uses a lot of shapes and colors. He also created his own type of painting style by combining two styles together. His paintings had different types of messages like some of the messages he sent out in his paintings were of education, what happens to people who migrate and also how woman were portrayed back in the old times. Jacob Lawrence was painting based on expedites of black labor in Southern U.S. He was inspired by Goya, Daumier, Arosco and Harlem Renaissance that he decided to make his own style. He also was interested in Matisse work because the color, flat space and the he used pattern interested him.

assignment # 4 part 2

The baroque and the renaissance period have different types of painting styles. You could distinguish the baroque from the renaissance by the different types of quality and elements which they use to express their perspective. The baroque style is very different from the renaissance you can tell the difference between the two in various ways. The Baroque style it is more of dark colors in the background has directed light which makes it have a strong contrast to the painting which captures your attention. The Baroque paintings show energy, feeling and scale in the paintings that sometimes you feel that you are there in person.  In the Baroque also uses vivid realism by using sharp diagonals and foreshortening, therefore these paintings are usually used for personal and mystical types of faith. On the other hand renaissance they were challenged by humanism which made them rediscover the arts of Rome and Greece. There were two different types of painting styles that were done in the renaissance period which are Gothic style and Italian renaissance. The renaissance used other types of mean to capture the viewers’ attention by using psychic lines, realism, space, implied space and linear perspective. In the renaissance paintings they also use warm colors and also show human emotions in the paintings. This is the period where they rediscovered realism and started to depict people feelings in the paintings more, which you were able to see more human emotions in the painting.

This is painting “Fra Carnevale” by Bartolomeo De Giovanni Corradini which is made by tempera and oil on wood. The painting itself is 57x 37 7/8 inches which is pretty  big and shows how much work and detail he put in the painting. The painting is about Madonna giving birth to her son in contemporary terms, in the background of the painting you could see the newborn baby is bathed by the midwives. In the painting you could see the woman in the front talking and greeting each other. This a perfect example of a renaissance painting because in the painting you see different colors you see the different qualities and styles that were used to make this painting. The way you could identify this painting from the renaissance is by looking at the painting and you could see linear perspective and also the vanishing point. If you look at the tile on the ceiling it goes straight to the baby and it vanishes. You could also see depth and space how everything looks to be far away and in the foreground is closer to you.
The Baroque painting “Merry Company on a Terrace” by Jan Steen which is oil on canvas the painting size is 141 x 131.4cm which is more like a normal size. The painting is about a waitress and she is holding a glass which makes it look sexually suggestive and she is so familiar with the musician but he has more to offer the waitress. This is painting you tell that it is Baroque because the painting has a lot of dark colors in the background and you could that light is trying to come in from the right side. The waitress is in the middle of the painting which draws your attention to her and the symbols around her. The meaning of the painting is that these people are spoiled and that there should be child rearing and garden of love and combined it into an original story.

assignment # 5

There are a couple of different types of art during the 18th and 19th century, those art works were romanticism, photography, realism, impressionist and port impressionist. The impressionist opposed doctrines of romantic and realism that they focused more on impressionism.  Most artists used these different types of art to express their messages, emotions or etc. In this time period a lot of the artist were mainly focused in impressionist which is based on what they see then what their mind knows about what they are viewing. The reason why many artists at the time began to be more involve with impressionism  because of a group of artist that were not allowed to show their art work at the salon of 1873.

Claude Monet was a very famous impressionist artist who drew a lot of paintings that showed how some of the impressionist viewed their surroundings. In this painting of Claude Monet you would not be able to identify what is exactly in the painting or what it about. You could look at it from close and far and the more you study the more it will become clear.  The impressionist they do a sketch and they do it fast they don’t take their time painting it or making sure that it is perfect. They paint on direct observation then going back to their studios to paint it and they also use small dabs of paint and not a lot of color in their paintings. Like here we can see how Claude Monet painting looks to us you could see where you could see the strokes of paint and how he only uses a few colors not so many so he could show us active balance.

In the post-impressionist the artist reacted differently because some artist didn’t feel like the impressionist wasn’t showing spiritual content or it was missing personal expression so it was split into two different groups. The two groups name were former organizational and personal expression in the post-impressionist they used a part of Japanese’s print to paint their paintings. The post-impressionist they see nature as gift so they paint it with a different perspective. The post-impressionist they use a lot of repetition and they flatten out shapes and makes it broader. Vincent Van Gogh painting he expresses of what the heart feels then what the outer expressions shows. which in this painting he shows how the wheat is in danger by crows and the storm that causes mayhem to the wheat.

assignment # 4 Rembrandt

The portrait of the "the business man hero" was a portrait of a businessman that sold fur and his business was about marketing fur. In the portrait that he asked Rembrandt to do for him, his whole body and head was covered in fur. The texture of the fur looks so real and makes it look like it is soft. His body is surrounded by a luminous light that seems to cling to his body. Behind his head you could see the light going into dark because of the gray and black behind his head. While you look back at his face you could feel the intensity and feel so realistic. Makes you feel that he is looking right at you, you could see the line and wrinkles in his face and his eyes looks so sharp. He is the "the Business man's hero" because in the painting he is branding himself with his own merchandise which also shows that he is rich. He is also showing different types of signs by the color on his face like the pink around his eye shows that he had slept very little that night. The way every wrinkle and line around his eyes make his eyes look sharp and slightly intelligent.
The mood of the portrait of the 83 year old woman is poignant vulnerability which in her face you could see that she is uncertain of something or she also looks kind of scared what is going to happen. She could be scared about whether she would be accepted up to heaven due to the sins she committed or could be who she is leaving behind. We don't know the reason but we could feel that it could be anything that could be worrying her. You could tell that she is either scared or unsure by the way he drew the wrinkles and lines around her face, they seem to droop and come down. Her eyes shows sadness in them you could feel it which this portrait makes you think that probably Rembrandt was a human psychologist.
Other painters painted Sampson half naked in between the arms of his lover which is Delilah.  What Rembrandt is communicating in his painting of Sampson and Delilah is that he painted Sampson fully clothed which makes him seem he is more vulnerable. He also painted a knot in his clothing which symbolizes the relationship between him and his lover. He is lying between her legs while she is she cutting his hair with her right hand while her left hand caresses the rest of his tresses. Rembrandt goes straight to the point of the story which is about the tragic inseparability of amorous tenderness and brutal betrayal.

assignment #3

The Medici family was so important in the development in the renaissance because they had a lot of money. They also took risk but they were helped Brunelleschi work was considered to be unorthodox but Cosimo still helped him and let him work on a structure for the dome. Cosimo also let artists show their artwork even if it was different then they would normally see around them. Donatello’s David was revolutionary because it was the first time since ancient Rome when he made the sculpture that is bronze. He took the risk of getting killed or beaten for showing a nude sculpture due to the fact that they considered a taboo. The sculpture is a life size bronze sculpture of David and he is wearing a hat and boots. He has a feather in his boot that reaches out to his knees which seems that the feather is caressing his leg. The stance of the sculpture shows his expression and the intensity. The sword which is on his right hand and the head at his feet symbolizes that there was a battle which he had won.

Assignment #2

All artists create different types of asymmetrical balance by making sure there is balance on the right and left side of the painting. Some artists use the color, shapes and forms to express what they are trying to convey. An artist also makes contrast with light and dark colors which brings the deliver the message. This painting called The Oxbow by Thomas Cole which shows a contrast between the colors like you could see the dark clouds in the left then you could see it turning light in the right. This shows that the thunderstorm destroyed the trees and that after it has passed that the light is shining which shows that there could be tranquility after a storm. There are several ways that artist uses to unify an art work by using repetition, color, shapes, patterns, forms and sculling structure. The painting shows how the color and shapes makes the painting come together. Scale changes the meaning of an artwork because it’s could change the viewer’s perspective or response about the art work.

First assignment #1

Mariely Sostre
3/19/14

There are many differences between Greek and Egyptian art. One of the difference is that Greek art is more focused about the world around them and how they portray everything they see. The Greek is also about philosophy in their art they portray human emotions and are so detailed about how the human body is supposed to be. The Greek also drew a lot about their gods and other things they wanted to. while the Egyptian were more focused on religion, they also made or drew things that were unrealistic. Therefore a lot of the Egyptian art always had half of a person infused with an animal. The Egyptian were strict they couldn't draw anything they wished so there paintings and etc, are based on the kings and queens which they consider them divine beings.
The image to your right is a coffin where they placed Henettawy they have placed her in along with her jewelry. They believed if they were buried with their jewelry they could still be rich in the next life. The coffin itself is really interesting how all the symbols mean something to them and also the story that the drawing portrays gives you a feeling or a sense of what they are trying to say. You could see her with her best clothes, wearing a crown while drinking from a wine cup with such finery. It also has a falcon with its wing spread out and has a scarab in  the middle that moves a sun disk which means the rebirth and the rising sun.
To the left it is a image about vase that portrays a story about Greek gods which the artists shows himself drawing for Herakles and while he is painting Herakles' lion-skin there are other events that is happening around him. while he paints away there is an African boy next to him is making sure the brazier is making the rods are hot enough so it could spread the wax. Also above there are also something else going on like Zeus which means victory. The Vase also shows more gods and their story which shows how the Greek viewed their world around them.
